- Great layering kit, I need shorter arms
The top layered brilliantly as a first layer followed by the Vertical. Wicked moisture very well and stood up to a fair bit of abuse over a month. I really like zip necks, because they allow good temperature control. Zipped all the way up on the cold days, the garment did not feel like it was choking me and sealed in my core warmth. When I got going, just cracking the zip slightly allowed ventilation to keep my body temp just right.
The only issue I seemed to have was the sleeve were like an inch or two short for me. I'm 6'1", 80kg, and the medium fit perfectly everywhere except the sleeves. Large would have been a sack. Probably just my gangly arms.
- Light weight zip neck polo in very soft Polartech, best as a first layer.
This is a zip neck version of ESSs crew necked skivvy which I have also reviewed so some of this is repeated (same cut and fabric). ESS say it is a relaxed fit which I’d agree with; I often take an L but the sleeves were way too long but an M fitted just fine (I’d shorten the sleeves a fraction). In typical ESS style the cut works well and it feels nice to wear. It is long enough to tuck in but not so long that it looks silly if you wear it out. The zip neck is well done with a quality fine tooth zip so it’s not cold on your chest. With the zip undone the polo collar sits nicely and if it gets colder it zips all the way up without strangling you or having the zip poking into your neck. So well designed in those little details. The sleeves have a simple cuff as opposed to elasticised which I guess is because it is designed as a first layer to be worn under something else.
I bought this to wear as a single layer inside or under a jacket outside or on a cold day in the BOP. On a mild winters day (13-15c) it is warm enough to wear on its own. However I wouldn’t recommend this as an outer layer because the first day I wore it (inside doing not a lot) I pulled a thread on the front. I thought it might be bad luck but I did the same thing on the zipped version the next day. ESS say that the material is durable & retains it shape well and I suspect this is correct. It certainly looks good with a very fine woven outer texture and as they say, a silky feel inside. But that fine weave seems to catch (on fingernails or maybe my jacket zip?) and because it is so fine, pulling a thread back to fix a snag is really tough. This may be why they are changing the fabric. So a great top with the caveat on the snagability of the material. For outer wear I will be trying one of their other fabrics.
